Price comparison in Pakistan: how it actually works

What is a price-comparison site actually doing when it tells you a price, and how much should you trust it?

Written from Dhundo’s own price data. Reviewed 2026-08-08; figures from the 2026-08-08 data snapshot.

Every price-comparison result is the output of a pipeline, and the pipeline's limits are the result's limits. This guide describes Dhundo's honestly - where the prices come from, what matching does and does not achieve, why a number can be stale, and what all of that means for the answer you get. It is the page to read before trusting any of the others.

Where a price comes from

A price on Dhundo starts as text on a store's own product page. When somebody searches, Dhundo asks the stores it covers for matching listings, reads the title, price, image and availability from each result, and stores them. Nothing is typed in by hand and nothing is supplied by the retailers, which means there is no editorial thumb on the scale and also no guarantee that a store's page was parsed perfectly.

The corpus that produces every statistic on this site is currently 3,16,326 stored listings from 124 stores, of which 38,584 have been sorted into a category. Those are counts of rows, not of distinct products: the same item surfaced by two different searches is stored twice, once per search, and every statistic on this site accounts for that by grouping before it counts.

What matching can and cannot do

To say "this product costs less over there", a comparison engine has to decide that two listings in two different stores are the same thing. There is no shared identifier to do that with - Pakistani retailers do not publish a common product code - so the only available evidence is the title.

Dhundo matches on the leading significant words of a title and refuses matches whose prices differ by more than a large multiple, because a phone case and a phone share the words "iPhone Pro Max" and pairing them would produce a spectacular and completely false saving. That guard is why some categories show many cross-store comparisons and others show almost none.

Where matching works, it works well: cosmetics with shade codes and phones with model numbers pair reliably. Where it does not - unbranded homeware, clothing described with adjectives, laptops with sprawling specification titles - Dhundo shows fewer comparisons rather than looser ones. Fewer true comparisons beat more false ones, and the difference is not visible to a reader unless somebody says so.

Why a price can be out of date

Listings are refreshed when a store is searched, not on a timer. A store people search often carries recent prices; a quiet one can hold a price for a while. Every product page names the store beside the price so the source is always one click away, and every statistic on this site is printed with the date it was computed.

This is the honest weakness of every comparison site, including the ones that do not mention it. The correct way to use any of them is as a way to narrow the field and find stores you did not know stocked the thing - then confirm the price on the store's page before you pay.

What Dhundo is not

It is not a shop. Nothing on this site is sold by Dhundo; every product link goes to the retailer, and the payment, the delivery and any return are theirs. That is also why there are no reviews or ratings of products anywhere on this site: the ratings that appear on store pages are the retailers' and republishing them as though they were reviews of Dhundo would be a fabrication.

It is not a complete index of Pakistani retail. It covers 124 stores that have returned listings so far. A store outside that set, or a product nobody has searched for, does not exist as far as any page here is concerned - and a page that implied otherwise would be claiming a completeness nobody can deliver.

It is not a price-history service either. Dhundo stores the current reading of a listing rather than a series, so it cannot tell you that something was cheaper last month or that a discount is real. Sites that make that claim need a continuous record of every price over time, and building one is a different product from the one this is.

What this guide cannot tell you

It cannot promise that any price shown is current. It can promise that every price was read from a store's own page and is shown with the store it came from.

It cannot promise a match is the same product. It can promise that Dhundo refuses matches it cannot justify, and shows fewer comparisons as a result.

It cannot tell you which retailer to trust. Delivery, returns and authenticity are properties of the shop, and the only thing a price index can do about them is put the shop's name next to the number.

Common questions

Does Dhundo get paid by the stores it lists?
Ranking is computed from how well a product matches your query. Where a placement is paid, it is shown as a sponsored strip that is separate from the ranked results rather than mixed into them, so the ordinary result list is not for sale.
Why does a product show only one store?
Either no other store Dhundo covers carries it, or their titles do not match closely enough for Dhundo to be confident it is the same item. Both cases show one store rather than an uncertain comparison.
How many stores does Dhundo actually read?
124 stores have returned listings that are currently stored. The supported-stores page lists the full set that Dhundo will search, which is larger, because a store that has never been searched has nothing stored yet.
